Geneva Required Information

The official currency of Geneva (and all of Switzerland) is the Swiss Franc (CHF); One Franc consists of 100 Rappen (also called centimes in French).

ATMs are widely available, and credit/debit cards are commonly accepted. However, it’s still a good idea to carry some cash, especially for small purchases or local markets.

Switzerland uses plug types C and J. Plug type C has two round pins, while type J has three round pins. The standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz.

If you are taking prescription medication, it’s recommended to bring enough for your entire stay. Swiss regulations allow travelers to carry personal medication for their own use. However, you should carry a copy of your prescription and keep medicines in their original packaging. Importing medicines by mail to private individuals is generally restricted.

Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area.

Nationals of many countries can enter Switzerland visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business purposes. Travelers from countries not exempt must apply for a Schengen visa before arrival.

Geneva Airport
Geneva Airport (GVA) is the main international airport serving Geneva.
It is located about 4 km from the city center and offers connections to major cities across Europe and worldwide.

Geneva is well connected by rail, with the main station:

  • Gare Cornavin

Trains connect Geneva to cities such as Paris, Zurich, Milan, and Lyon. High-speed services like the TGV Lyria operate between Geneva and Paris.

Geneva has an efficient public transport system operated by Transports Publics Genevois (TPG), including trams, buses, trolleybuses, and boats.

With a valid ticket, you can use all modes of public transport. Many hotels provide a free Geneva Transport Card, which allows unlimited travel during your stay.

Day Ticket for One Person:
A day pass allows unlimited travel throughout the network for one day. Prices vary depending on zones, but a standard adult day ticket typically costs around CHF 10–12. Tickets are valid until 5 a.m. the following day.
